Standard asphalt shingles add very little thickness to the roof because a standard three tab shingle is about 3 16 inch thick. So bad contractor could quote 1mm thickness during contracts bidding and use 0 8mm thickness without the knowledge of the client. Four are epdm membranes and the fifth is a polyurathane liquid. Manufacturers express the thickness of metal panels as their gauge with 22 gauge being the thickest and 29 gauge the thinnest of traditionally sold metal roof and wall panels.

Each gauge represents a nominal decimal range. For example standard 29 gauge steel roofing made in long panels is about 0 36 millimeters thick and the 26 gauge version is slightly thicker at 0 48 millimeters. A good contractor will clarify the client with different ranges of aluminum roofing sheet thickness in the market and their cost while a bad contractor will not do that.
